Better But Not Well

Better But Not Well
By:"Richard G. Frank","Sherry A. Glied"
Published on 2008-04-01 by JHU Press

The past half-century has been marked by major changes in the treatment of mental illness: important advances in understanding mental illnesses, increases in spending on mental health care and support of people with mental illnesses, and the availability of new medications that are easier for the patient to tolerate. Although these changes have made things better for those who have mental illness, they are not quite enough. In Better But Not Well, Richard G. Frank and Sherry A. Glied examine the well-being of people with mental illness in the United States over the past fifty years, addressing issues such as economics, treatment, standards of living, rights, and stigma. Marshaling a range of new empirical evidence, they first argue that people with mental illness—severe and persistent disorders as well as less serious mental health conditions—are faring better today than in the past. Improvements have come about for unheralded and unexpected reasons. Rather than being a result of more effective mental health treatments, progress has come from the growth of private health insurance and of mainstream social programs—such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, housing vouchers, and food stamps—and the development of new treatments that are easier for patients to tolerate and for physicians to manage. The authors remind us that, despite the progress that has been made, this disadvantaged group remains worse off than most others in society. The \

Environmental Health for All

Environmental Health for All
By:"David J. Briggs","Richard M. Stern","Tim L. Tinker"
Published on 1998-12-31 by Springer Science & Business Media

The development of National Environmental Health Action Plans (NEHAPs) has become a major initiative in Europe, with 51 countries now committed to introducing plans by the new millennium. This book is the first substantive attempt to review recent experience in formulating these plans, and to examine and assess the technical and psycho-sociological tools available to support such plans. It brings together results from four of the leading countries involved in NEHAP developments (Sweden, Czech Republic, Romania and Poland) and describes the techniques that were used to identify and prioritise key environmental issues, and to identify policy responses. It also provides an up-to-date review of the methods and tools available for risk assessment, risk communication and priority setting, which are relevant not only to NEHAPs but to environmental planning more generally, and to many other areas of public policy. The discussion of these techniques is supported by numerous case studies, and is concluded by a series of chapters reflecting on the conceptual and research issues that still need to be addressed. The book will thus be of interest and value to all those concerned with developing and applying environmental health policy, to environmental epidemiologists, and to students and practitioners in the wider area of public policy.

By:"P. F. Ricci","M. D. Rowe"
Published on 2013-10-22 by Elsevier

Process and input-output analysis have emerged as the two principal methods of analyzing health risks of energy technologies. This book describes applications and differences between these two methods with discussions of sources or error and uncertainty, data limitations and some solutions to common problems. Its goals are to provide understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the methods and to provide a basis for standardizing risk assessment for energy policy analysis. Sections of the book describe risk analysis and develop issues common to both the process and input-output methods, describe data bases and their limitations, discuss use of environmental models for generating environmental information not available in data bases, describe applications of the methods in case studies, and discuss the state-of-the-art of the two models and opportunities for combining them to take advantage of their relative strengths and weaknesses.

Handbook of Healthcare Delivery Systems

Handbook of Healthcare Delivery Systems
By:"Yuehwern Yih"
Published on 2016-04-19 by CRC Press

With rapidly rising healthcare costs directly impacting the economy and quality of life, resolving improvement challenges in areas such as safety, effectiveness, patient-centeredness, timeliness, efficiency, and equity has become paramount. Using a system engineering perspective, Handbook of Healthcare Delivery Systems offers theoretical foundations, methodologies, and case studies in each main sector of the system. It explores how system engineering methodologies and their applications in designing, evaluating, and optimizing the operations of the healthcare system could improve patient outcomes and cost effectiveness. The book presents an overview of current challenges in the healthcare system and the potential impact of system engineering. It describes an integrated framework for the delivery system and the tools and methodologies used for performance assessment and process improvement with examples of lean concept, evidence-based practice and risk assessment. The book then reviews system engineering methodologies and technologies and their applications in healthcare. Moving on to coverage of the design, planning, control and management of healthcare systems, the book contains chapters on 12 services sectors: preventive care, telemedicine, transplant, pharmacy, ED/ICU, OR, decontamination, laboratory, emergency response, mental health, food and supplies, and information technology. It presents the state-of-the-art operations and examines the challenges in each service unit. While system engineering concepts have been broadly applied in healthcare systems, most improvements have focused on a specific segment or unit of the delivery system. Each unit has strong interactions with others and any significant improvement is more likely to be sustained over time by integrating the process and re-evaluating the system design from a holistic viewpoint. By providing an overview of individual operational sectors in the extremely complex healthcare system and introducing a wide array of engineering methods and tools, this handbook establishes the foundation to facilitate integrated system thinking to redesign the next generation healthcare system.

Mental Health Care Delivery

Mental Health Care Delivery
By:"Isaac M. Marks"
Published on 1990-08-31 by Cambridge University Press

The provision of effective mental health services, at a reasonable cost, to all sections of the population is one of the most pressing problems facing clinicians, planners and administrators of mental health services in the industrialised countries. Changes in paradigms for mental health care delivery are accelerating, and are likely to culminate in the 1990s in major shifts in many countries. This book reviews the emerging patterns of health care delivery in different western countries, outlining the innovations of recent years and analysing some of the impediments to their full implementation. The contributors are all prominent experts in mental health services, whose chapters comprise an up-to-date account of many of the most important issues in mental health care delivery today. The text falls into three sections. Part I describes a number of innovations in the community care of psychiatric patients, including programmes for psychotic patients, primary care based psychiatric services for non-psychotics and emergency services in community settings. Part II examines the main impediments to their systematic implementation whether sociopolitical, administrative, economic or professional. Part III integrates the book, provides an overview, and details some specific issues in the implementation of innovation in mental health care delivery.

Social Justice
By:"Madison Powers","Ruth Faden"
Published on 2008-09-25 by Oxford University Press

In bioethics, discussions of justice have tended to focus on questions of fairness in access to health care: is there a right to medical treatment, and how should priorities be set when medical resources are scarce. But health care is only one of many factors that determine the extent to which people live healthy lives, and fairness is not the only consideration in determining whether a health policy is just. In this pathbreaking book, senior bioethicists Powers and Faden confront foundational issues about health and justice.

Improving health is a key concern of all societies, a crucial aspect for individuals but at the same time, it can contribute to higher economic growth and welfare. Thus health care has always been a complicated policy issue and cannot be separated from other issues that impinge on health such as growth, inequality, poverty etc. With a special reference to the Republic of Armenia, this book discusses the problem of achieving and sustaining redistributive health care in the context of inequality and low incomes and presents the pro-poor aspects of health policies in most important aspects.

Accessibility and Utilization
By:"Alun E Joseph","David R Phillips"
Published on 1984-02-28 by SAGE

This book combines a wide-ranging theoretical view of accessibility and utilization with empirical experience from a variety of comparable health-care delivery systems - those of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The authors focus on primary health-care provision, but also consider secondary and tertiary facilities. Where previous medical geography texts have dealt with disease ecology, this book provides a comprehensive review of recent geographical research into the health service system and its utilization. The book is clearly structured and well written, enabling students to grasp the essentials of the subject. The skilful use of references will permit more advanced students to follow up the topics in greater detail.
